Birds and Flowers Centerpiece

I wanted to make a new centerpiece for my kitchen table.  Something for summer and what I hope are warmer days ahead. {It’s been extra rainy and cold here for a while now- spring fever is starting to kick in. 🙂 }  When I found out I had won a package from Kami at NoBiggie full of fun Elmer’s craft supplies- I knew I was in luck!
The package contained glue, glue dots, foam core board, gel pens, Xacto retractable blades, decorative edge scissors and more.  It was like Christmas for this craft supply addict!
I got busy and finally came up with this super cute centerpiece.  I’d love to show you how I did it.

First you will need your foam core, pencil and X-acto blade.  Draw the shape you want on the foam core board.  Using the blade, carefully cut out the shape.  A few tips:  1. Make sure you have cutting mat underneath your board- don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🙂 2.  Keep the blade straight up and down so your cuts are flat, not sloped.  3.  Make your first cut with medium pressure, going most of the way through the core, then go over it again to completely cut the other side.  4.  After your piece is out you can trim it up with scissors or sanding paper, but you’ll want your first cut to be as good as you can since your use of these tools is somewhat limited.

Trace the shape onto your selected scrapbook paper and cut it out.  Use a glue stick to attach it to the shape.  I LOVE this glue!  It’s strong and holds great- it is not your children’s glue stick. 🙂
Again, another tip is to slide the stick from the inside of the shape to the edge, so you don’t get a ridge of glue on the side of the shape.  Repeat for the other side.  I also wanted to make my shapes more dimensional after seeing Irene’s cute birds here.  So I cut out accent pieces and covered one side of them with paper as well.  If you want to distress your shapes like I did, you will want to do that now.

I used the dot runner to glue these smaller shapes to the bigger pieces.

I used small dowels and pushed them into the center of the foam board shapes.  Then I pushed them into a piece of floral foam I had placed in my container.  I covered the foam with paper Easter grass.  After I got them in the bucket, I realized that they were missing a little something.  So I went down to my embellishment stash and had some fun.  And now, I love them!!

From the side.  You can see the foam core, but I love it!

I’m going to be using these a lot in the next few weeks- so keep your eyes open.

I received this product from a give away on No Biggie, but the opinions are mine.  🙂
XOXO,
Amy.
p.s. the Theme-day Thursday bag update is going to be late.  Tomorrow is my sewing day, so hopefully it will mean I’ll have something to actually share. 🙂
